The double cross-brace provides a stronger frame for the Action 4NG, making it better suited to bigger and taller people. This means seat depths of up to 20 inches are available, as well as higher seat heights; ideal for tall people with longer legs, and also for heavier people. While the standard Action 4NG has the same weight capacity of the Action 3NG, there is an HD version with an impressive 25 stone (160 kg) capacity.
Despite this, the double cross-brace only adds 1 kg to the weight of the wheelchair, compared to the Action 3 NG, meaning it stays easy to push, propel or lift.
As with the Action 3NG, there are a whole host of customisation options, including but not limited to:
Propulsion - self-propelled or transit.
Sizing - seat width, depth and height for a perfect fit.
Cushions - from a basic foam cushion to a range of Invacare and third-party cushions for high levels of comfort and pressure-relief.
Backrest - choice of upholsteries, including tension-adjustable backrests for higher levels of support, reclining backrests, folding ones, and height adjustable push handles.
Legrests - standard swing-away legrests at a choice of angles, elevating legrests, one-piece footplates, and amputee supports.
Armrests - swing away ones, T-style removable armrests, and a choice of standard or short "desk" armpads.
Positioning accessories - headrests, lateral supports and Bodypoint belts.
Wheels - puncture resistant or solid tyres, plastic-coated handrims, different sized castor wheels.
Frame colours - 8 to choose from as standard, but any available at an upcharge, resulting in a wheelchair personalised to your style.
Functional options - anti-tips, step tubes, tray tables cane holders.
Our Verdict
We think the Action range is great for people who want a regular wheelchair that fits them properly, and has the features they need to support their lifestyle. For taller people who struggle to fit in basic wheelchairs (you might often find your knees sticking up in the air) the Invacare Action 4NG Wheelchair is perfect as it actually fits as it should, providing you with much greater comfort.
Also worth considering is Karma's Flexx HD, which has a slightly higher weight capacity, although it is more expensive, and the Flexx Tall for taller users.
