A larger version of the standard Flexx, the HD version is available in seat widths of 20, 22 or 24 inches, and depths of either 16, 18 or 20 inches. Combined with the 170 kg weight capacity, this means it can take larger and heavier people, providing them with a seat that comfortable fits them.
The double crossbrace and sturdy aluminium ensures the wheelchair's durability, while adjustable centre of gravity provides better stability. Many other features can be adjusted, including the backrest angle and height, allowing the wheelchair to more precisely fit your needs than a "one size fits all" basic chair. All the Flexx range of accessories can be fitted as optional extras, such as elevating leg rests, height adjustable push handles, and a tension adjustable backrest.
Both transit and self-propelled variants are available - the transit version is slightly lighter and ideal when the wheelchair user will only be pushed. The self-propelled version allows the wheelchair user to propel themselves, and the wheelchair can easily be removed for transport. Both come as standard with a folding push-bar, which reinforces the wheelchair and allows for easier pushing.
Transport
While some heavy duty chairs are cumbersome and heavy to transport, the Flexx HD is just 16.5 kg (transit) or 17.3 kg (self-propelled), and the transport weight can be reduced to just 10.6 kg and 10.9 kg respectively, with the legrests and wheels removed. The Flexx folds up easily to a compact size, allowing it to fit within the back of a car.
Our Verdict
The Karma Flexx HD Wheelchair is one of our favourite "heavy duty" wheelchairs, offering good value, and the choice of sizes providing a "perfect fit". It is most often considered against Invacare's Action 4NG, which is cheaper but has a lower weight capacity, and doesn't have the folding backbrace included.
