Tilt in Space wheelchairs are often hired or purchased for those in care homes who have dementia or may have suffered from strokes or similar medical conditions. They provide far more comfort than standard manual wheelchairs, with contoured cushioning, while they assist with posture for those who struggle to maintain the appropriate position. For people who need to spend longer amounts of time in a wheelchair, they are ideal, with the recline and elevating leg rests allowing the wheelchair user to sleep in it, while tilt assists with pressure relief.
Our model of tilt in space wheelchair is the Invacare Rea Azalea transit, which is the most well-known model of tilt in space wheelchair available, recommended by health professionals across the country, and the one that care staff are most likely to be familiar with.
The Rea Azalea can be reclined from 0° - 30°, and the seat can be further tilted to 25° - these assist with both comfort and posture, as well as helping with transfer into and out of the wheelchair. The elevating leg rests are fully adjustable, allowing them to be set up exactly to the needs of the wheelchair user. The seat can be supplied with seat widths of 15 - 21 inches, and depths of 17 - 20 inches, allowing it to be set up to provide a perfect fit.
Additional support is provided by two lateral supports (not pictured), which are positioned on either side of the seat just below shoulder height. The three-wing adjustable headrest provides support both to the back, and to either side of their head. A removable pommel can be supplied if needed with the wheelchair, which is positioned in the middle of the front of the seat and helps prevent the wheelchair user from slumping to either side. Should it be required, a slide-on tray table can be provided to allow the wheelchair user to easily eat meals when in the wheelchair - this is an additional £5 (ex VAT) per week.
For those needing more advanced pressure care, the standard Floshape seat cushion can be easily removed, allowing a pressure cushion to be fitted instead. For those needing a pressure cushion, we are able to hire out the Invacare Matrx Flo-Tech Solution for £20 (ex VAT) per week, which features a contoured foam base, and dual-layer gel sacs to provide a high degree of pressure relief - this is the go-to pressure cushion for the NHS.
The attendant push handles are height adjustable and come with brakes; additional parking brakes can be found at the front of the wheels. The Rea Azalea is fully crash tested, making it suitable for occupied transportation in a suitably adapted vehicle.
