The standout feature on the Karma MVP 502 Wheelchair is its reclining backrest, which combines with the elevated legrests to allow the occupant to sit back in a more relaxed position. The comfortably padded seat and head support allows for extended use of the wheelchair, and the tension-adjustable backrest and seat can be adjusted to conform to the contours of the wheelchair user. While reclining seats typically result in bad posture due to forward sliding, the MVP features Karma's unique anti-sliding V-seating system. This slopes downwards at a 20° angle near the backrest to reduce forward sliding, as well as shear on the back.
The MVP is available in a choice of seat sizes - 16, 17 and 18" widths as standard or 15 and 20" widths for an additional cost. This ensures it provides a good fit for the wheelchair user, and discourages slumping to the side.
Either transit or self-propelled configurations are available, depending on whether the occupant will want to propel themselves. The push bar at the back makes it easy to push and manoeuvre the wheelchair with just one hand.
The MVP 502 can be folded up for transport - the headrest and back cushion detach easily, and the frame and backrest then fold up to a compact size. While the nature of the chair makes it heavier than a conventional non-reclining wheelchair, it is still a relatively light weight that can be lifted into a car.
Our Verdict
The MVP is an unusual chair - most will choose to opt for a wheelchair that tilts as well, as this provides a level of pressure relief - vital for those who spend much of the day in a wheelchair, such as stroke and dementia patients. However, if recline is the only seating adjustment you need, the MVP is a good option. We would suggest considering it alongside Invacare's Action 3NG Comfort, which features comfort seating and the ability to recline.
