The Sterling S400 is part of a new generation of pavement scooters with suspension that was previously only found on road scooters. It is by far the most impressive scooter in its class, offering a whole host of luxury features. Foremost amongst these is the all-round adjustable suspension that cushions the ride, particularly when combined with the sizeable 10 inch pneumatic tyres. The high-back seat provides comfort and support unrivalled by the smaller low-back seats found on its competitors, and is fully adjustable: the height, depth and recline can be adjusted, while the armrests are width, angle and depth adjustable.
In terms of performance, while the weight capacity is a slightly lower than average 21.5 stone, the S400 has an outstanding 22 mile range, powered by large 38 Ah batteries. Intuitive anti-tips move up as you go over obstacles, while keeping you safe on slopes. Other safety features include the super-bright LED lights with improved energy efficiency, as well as two wing mirrors as standard.
The delta handlebar is ergonomically designed, and easy to reach with the infinitely adjustable tiller - which is even clever enough to automatically tilt the headlight as the angle is adjusted. The unique wig-wag allows the S400 to be controlled by using either your fingers or thumbs - ideal for those with restricted dexterity or limited use of one hand. The controls are waterproof, allowing all-weather use, with soft touch buttons that are easy to press. Finally, the S400 boasts a loud horn - unusual for a mobility scooter, whose horns are traditionally just a beep.
Our Verdict
Sterling's S400 is the ultimate 4 mph scooter in terms of performance and comfort - only faster road scooters match or better it. If you don't want your scooter to be faster than 4 mph, and want the best model available, the S400 is the scooter for you.
This does result in it being a bit bigger and more expensive than other pavement scooters, such as the Colt Plus and Leo - however, the massive improvement in the ride quality justify this.
