Ki Mobility Liberty FT Wheelchair

The Liberty is a unique fully-configurable tilt in space chair that folds up for transport. With a transport weight from just 11.7 kg, it can be easily lifted into a car, and will fit into the boot of almost every vehicle.

Product Description

Folding Frame

Typical tilt in space wheelchairs feature chunky rigid frames that cannot fold, meaning they require specially adapted vehicles to be transported in - they won't fit in a regular car. A few folding tilt in space wheelchairs exist, such as Karma's VIP 2, but the VIP is a basic wheelchair with limited seating options and which is not ideal for "all day" use.

Ki Mobility's Liberty FT is the only tilt in space wheelchair that offers both - fully configurable seating with a lightweight, transportable frame. The unique frame design allows it to be folded easily to a compact size equivalent to a basic manual wheelchair, particularly if the fold-down backrest option is chosen. It weighs from just 11.7 kg with quick-release wheels popped off, making it the lightest tilt in space wheelchair on the market.

Tilt in Space

The Liberty features 20° of tilt - not as high as found on some other models of tilt in space chairs, but more than enough to make a difference - providing pressure relief and aiding posture. The tilt mechanism is unique in that the front seat height remains constant, no matter the tilt angle. This makes the Liberty ideal for those who wish to foot propel, as this can be done regardless of the tilt angle.

Configurable Seating

A wide range of seating requirements can be accommodated on the Liberty. As standard it comes with basic sling seat and backrest, which will suit those after a relatively basic manual wheelchair that can tilt and is transportable. However, more advanced seating systems - whether the Axiom range of cushions and backs - or third party pressure cushions and backrests such as the Jay range can be fitted.

Every aspect of the Liberty can be customised, from the adjustable size seat frame that provides a perfect fit, to seating options such as headrests, armrest options, elevating legrests and more. One of the most popular combinations is the reclining backrest along with elevating legrests, which alongside some tilt lets you lie back in a relaxed position.

The modular nature of the Liberty FT means it can then be further modified should your requirements change. This could include fitting seating accessories, resizing the chair, or even just switching the wheels between transit and self-propelled ones.

Style

There's no doubt about it, the Liberty is a distinctive wheelchair. Like all Ki products, it has a bold, modern look to it, and it's nothing like the dated "silver frame and grey tyres" looks of traditional tilt in space wheelchairs. The frame is available in a choice of 21 colours, and the majority of other components are supplied in a stylish black finish. Further colour can be added if you opt for one of the Axiom backrests, or for younger users the brightly finished spokeguards.

Our Verdict

The Ki Mobility Liberty FT Wheelchair is one of our most popular tilt in space wheelchairs. It doesn't cater to those with the most advanced clinical requirements - a model with a higher degree of tilt such as the Dahlia 45 or Ki's Focus would be more suited. However, for those who need a decent level of tilt in a modern looking chair that is highly-transportable, the Liberty is the obvious choice.

We have found the Liberty FT to be particularly popular among younger people - the seat is available in paediatric sizes for teens (younger children should consider the Little Wave Arc) and the funky frame colours make it stand out. It is also ideal for rehab following a stroke, where the modular nature allows it to cater to changing function.
