The Aviva RX40 has broken new ground as a high-performance rear-wheel drive powerchair that has an outstandingly compact 56 cm base that makes it ultra-manoeuvrable. The RX20 is essentially a lower cost version of the RX40 with some more basic features and options on it.
Power base
The RX20 features the same patented CTC suspension as the RX40, giving a smooth rider even over challenging terrain such as cobblestones. This is adjustable to your ride preference, whether that be for a softer, spongier feel, or a sporty harder ride.
While the RX40 has 60 Ah batteries as standard, plus the option to upgrade to 73.5 Ah batteries for an outstanding range, the RX20 has 52 Ah batteries, meaning it doesn't do quite the same distance. It is also restricted to 4 mph, so cannot be used on roads. The smaller, solid castor wheels also slightly restrict performance.
Despite this, it must be emphasised that the RX20 remains a good performer outdoors if speed is not your priority, being comfortable and capable.
Seating
There are two seating systems available for the RX20 - the first being the "Standard seat" (first picture) which features limited adjustability but comes in at a lower price - this is ideal for those without any advanced seating requirements, and who won't be using their powerchair throughout the day.
The Modulite seat is a much more advanced seating system, fully prescriptive with a wide range of options to ensure a perfect fit, and able to be adapted to changing needs. This includes powered seating functions, although notably you cannot get a seat riser on the RX20.
Controls
The innovative LiNX control system features on the RX20 - simple to use, yet packed with impressive features. This includes the option for a colour touchscreen joystick on the Modulite seat version - a popular upgrade.
There is no option for a G-Trac gyro upgrade on the RX20; however with the slower 4 mph top speed, this is not generally an issue.
Style
The RX20 is just as stylish as the RX40 - in fact it is hard to see the difference between them at first glance. It has a few less shroud colours available as standard, but there is still the option for custom colours if desired.
Our Verdict
While the Invacare Aviva RX20 Powerchair isn't as richly-featured as the RX40, it is still an impressive chair. It is extremely comfortable - both from the seating and suspension - and highly compact; the ideal choice for those after a stylish chair with good manoeuvrability indoors and for pavement use outside.
If you are after top level outdoor performance, then we would have to recommend the RX40 instead. Otherwise, the other models to consider this against are Quickie's Q100 R and Q200 R, and Quantum's slightly more basic Aspen.
